What is Load Sway :
In a typical crane or hoist, the load is suspended to the from the crane through a flexible member either a wire rope or a chain. Whenever the cross travel or the long travel motion happens or stops the load due to its inertia, starts to swing. This swinging action of Load is called LOAD SWAY. The more the height of the wire rope the more the LOAD
LOAD SWAY is always a huge problem for the crane operator specially when precise positioning of the load is required.
Till few years back and even today (in some cranes) the positioning of the load and impact of Load Sway was considered to be operator skill. Few operators also used plugging operation to control the load sway. Eventually Load Sway hampers productivity and also has safety hazards.
How can Load Sway Be reduced
Load Sway can be minimised with the use of VVVF Drives or soft starters. VVVF Drives drives have feature of controlled acceleration and deceleration, hence the sudden increase of speed from 0 to designed (or vice versa) is achieved in a controlled manner, thereby reducing the Load Sway.
